About Us

About Christ Lutheran Church

After some years of infrequent activity, this congregation was organized in 1892 as Bouton’s first church.  Still after 120 years, we continue to worship the Lord and serve him as part of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. We believe that Christ Jesus is our Lord and Savior who has won for us and all believers’ eternal peace with and from God.  We are a family committed to growing in our faith and in our support for our community and one another.  We welcome you!  Services are held each Sunday at 10:30 a.m., preceded at 9:30 a.m. for Sunday School and Adult bible Study.  We have an active education and youth ministry.

The roots of Christ Lutheran Church were put down by German immigrants and for many decades it was known simply as the German Lutheran church.  It is one of the older LCMS congregations in the Des Moines area.  For many years in the early 1900’s it shared a pastor with Trinity Des Moines who traveled back and forth via the Interurban Railroad.  Two sons of the congregation (Dan Luett and Max Phillips) have entered the Public Ministry, one daughter of the congregation (Kate Phillips) is preparing for the teaching ministry, and the church has spawned a daughter congregation–Trinity in Perry.  In January 2007, the congregation moved to its present facility located on the SW corner of the intersection at IA Hwy 141 and US Hwy 169.

Our primary purpose as God’s people gathered here is to spread the good news of the savior as far and wide as possible by our proclamation and Christian Service.  The Holy Spirit takes our feeble efforts and makes them GREAT!

Our Congregation

We have a wonderful group of people of all ages with many talents and gifts. Visit our Facebook page to see what we are up to lately and pictures of our latest events!

What Does CLC Do?

In addition to worship, prayer, study and fellowship, our congregation is very active in mission and community service.  We are a host site for Angelfood Ministries which monthly provides low cost, quality food for hundreds of our neighbors.  We have adopted a nearby abandoned roadside park and are bringing it back to life.  We support numerous mission projects through special gifts and offerings.  Members volunteer at area homes for the elderly.   We are open to your ideas for additional projects!  In addition to our outside kingdom services, we love each other through our caring.  Here at CLC, if you are a singer, we invited you to join our choir (see calendar for practice dates and times).  If you are an eater…don’t miss the opportunity to stay after worship and join our Fellowship Meal (usually first Sunday of the month, but check calendar to confirm).  As part of our hospitality, ministry food is prepared by our CLC cooks and made for YOU!  Please come!

Our Worship Service

Our worship services primarily use an order of worship found in the Lutheran Service Book.

Holy Communion

The sacrament is celebrated on first, third and fifth Sundays in addition to special days.

Bible Study

This is a critical component of every Christian’s faith life.  By it, God strengthens us so that our relationship with Him brings comfort into every day and every care.  Here at CLC, we offer several Bible classes in different settings to fit busy schedules.  Each Sunday morning at 9am, Pastor teaches and adult class that focuses on a variety of topics.  Also held at 9am is the children’s and young adult classes.  CLC Women meet at various times in small groups.

The Pastor

Pastor Max Phillips is our shepherd and has served here since the summer of 2000.  He is a graduate of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.  He and his wife, Sherrill, have three children and live in rural Woodward.  He can be reached at the church office at (515) 676-2289 or by filling out our website contact form.

Our gifts are given in response to the blessings that God delivers to us.  These are used in part for the ongoing operation of the church including salaries, utilities, facility costs, etc.  A significant portion is used to fund our mission outreach and community service both through local efforts accomplished by our congregation alone and non-local efforts accomplished through the partnership of our 175 Iowa District West churches nationally and internationally.
